ABSTRACT: The article focuses on the influence of technology on the development of literature. The development of writing itself, then, particularly as it has been investigated in the past two decades by the late Eric Havelock (1986) and Jesper Svenbro (1993), might be conveniently stipulated as the initial enabling technology. What human technology might be like later on in history is ironically foreshadowed earlier in Paradise Lost, in the somewhat mock-heroic account of the War in Heaven, the failed revolt of Satan's rebel angels.
