ABSTRACT: This article explores the kinds of taxonomies that support the reasoning that everyday categories are embedded in comprehensive knowledge structures that not only catalogue difference but interpret it. A similar readiness to go beyond the information given is found in taxonomies of people. Much of a man's everyday life involves interactions with and expectations about other humans. Under impoverished learning conditions, humans display a highly regrettable willingness to attribute to members of certain categories characteristics that have very little or no empirical basis.
